Michael Hartl's epic tutorial covers everything from installing Rails to using Github, deploying on Heroku and writing tests. It takes awhile to get through but once you've finished you'll be set to start writing your own apps.

You see everything needed (principles, syntax and progress) to get up and running. The videos are not edited, which may pain some more advanced users, but actually seeing errors and the debugging process is an invaluable part of getting started.

For disclosure: I'm the author of this tutorial. While this is still work in progress it attempts to teach to code with modules assembled in projects. I believe this is best way to learn to code. Every module will eventually be complemented by a video. At the moment - about 3 weeks into building the content and the app itself, it has blogging platform tutorial. Next one on the schedule is a simple project management application.

Big Nerd Ranch is one of the leading publishers of mobile app dev books. This book is extremely in-depth and teaches you a lot about Objective C and some theory around iOS dev.

Ray Wenderlich's tutorials are completely comprehensive and have a ton of screenshots. This one takes you through the steps of making your first iPhone app with table views and an image picker. It introduces iOS patterns and the XCode working environment without overloading you with a lot of theory.

This tutorial breaks down a Backbone app into 5 parts, and presents them in increasing complexity. It explains briefly what every function does without going into excessive detail.

Teaches the user to *think like a programmer* as opposed to only focusing on basic syntax. Edabit also adds some nice little touches like XP, achievements and a leaderboard. It has basic game mechanics without going overboard on "gamification".

I read this in 2008 to start doing HTML the right way and have recommended it to dozens of people. It looks like it's been refreshed with modern content and I bet it's just as yummy, have a crack!
Oh and the book is fantastic too.
